IRCd based on ultimate...
« on: December 24, 2005, 06:01:49 am »
hello. :D

I'd like to ask permission to shadow to use the heart of UltimateIRCd to make some modifications.. (to use on a private network).
I don't like ripping and i don't think that i'm ripping uircd source code, because i'm not going to change the credits and i'm gonna show to everyone who ask about the modification only one thing: This IRCd is based on UltimateIRCd.
I'll leave the credits, the "internal base" and everything more.. but i'll do some mods, like new commands, new chan/user-modes...

doing this, i'll have to change the name of ircd, correct? (like another uird based project i read on this forum)

thank you..

(sorry the english)
(the english is a reason of the big modification: translate to PT-BR (brazil))  :)
Could I? Should I?

I appreciate you asking, but the GPL grants you explicit permission to do what you ask :)
As for the name, you have several options. You are within your right to keep the name, and release it under whatever version you'd like. However this is not the preffered method as it easilly creates confusion.

The two common ways of doing it is either by adding a suffix to the version (patchlevel) ie, UltimateIRCd3.0.1(Tsunami).YourPatchNameHere or renaming it entirely.
Common practise dictates that minor changes, where the IRCd is largely unchanged use the patchlevel suffix, and more extensive changes (in which the IRCd is normally forked and maintained as a completely separate codebase) change the name.

All 3 are within your rights as granted by the GPL, but id prefer you choose one of the two latter :)

Just remember that we cannot support modified IRCd's either way.
Happy coding and happy hollidays.

I'll rename the project  ;) it's very easy to do this and i don't want to make the users to be confused with the ircds name. :) I'll make so many modifications.. so this is the better way that i see :)

thank you and happy hollidays ;D
