+p - What is it?
« on: June 08, 2003, 05:39:45 am »
I've been using IRC for a while, and all the time I've been curious - what exactly is +p ? I believe that at one point it was used to hide the topic from a /list - but not I can't find any difference between it, and +s

Any idea's? ;)

channel mode +s is secret
channel mode +p is private

on both these modes the channels are not listed in /who, /whois, etc. of a user on it, so you dont know who is on the channel unless you join it..

on channel mode +s the channel is NOT show on /list, while on channel mode +p it is..

A channel cannot be both +p and +s

Hope this helps

afaik +p is more or less unused on more or less all networks, and is also partly broken and semi converted to +s on most. The only reason it havent been removed is that its one of the modes specified in the RFC.

I do plan to tear +p out at some point and merely make /mode #Channel +p and alias for +s.

I used it and i have seen +p used without +s on networks where its features include /who/whois but not /list hiding.

i think the major reason is that these networks have so many chans , if u actually _successfuly_ found it thru /list - it means ur not some random /whois follower.
