Linux average is way low than 2 years. You can be sure about that.

How exactly are ya saying that ?
I have known FreeBSD based servers running for 4 years straight....now thats something no windows will ever give you ;) not in a million years...

Yes, there are the odd exceptions that there are admins who do have a clue. 99% of the worlds population does not however. And 99% of any serious IRC network will not allow windows based servers to be linked, not because the actual software cannot be produced at the same quality, but the lack of robustness of the underlying operating system.

I agree on all of this,

1. Windows sucks when it comes to ircd , my friend tried it once using cygwin ===> his conclusion: dont ever try it out again, he had misery for days UNTIL, i gave him a shell account and learned him the commands when that made him go like: "Wtf ? so easy to do ?"  :)

2. Unix / Linux servers are all sort of one of a kind, why do you think people use them for ircd and so on ? because they have the great power that is called : STABILITY  :)

It is a fact that a machine which serves thousands of clients and using windows as an OS needs to be rebooted reguraly for the best performance.
for example, an israeli chat site with over 5000 users every night has a regular maintance reboot every week.
They know its the windows, they know they wont have to do it with a linux server, but they keep things how they are.

Just for the record, it is plain simply wrong to compare a program compiled using cygwin to a program written for the platform.

Cygwin is just an emulation layer and being an emulation layer, it in itself will degrade preformance.

Yes its a known fact that Windows have a tendency to grind itself to a halt. Not so much for servers running well written programs only, but its still there. A decent example would be the memoryleak in Windows 2k which is fixed in SP4 (not yet released publicly)

Yah i am sorry Shadow Master its just, you get my point thats the important thing.

I just mean that windows with a simulated base programm called cygwin cant never replace the good unix systems that are way stable then a :badword:ty windows box :)

Thats way ircd's should only be run on linux / unix systems

ircd's are expected to run on stable / fast servers : linux / unix are the only kind of servers which are well capable of doing this

Cygwin just kills performance on Unix... if you want the maximum performance on Windows there's no way other than using non-Unix-APIs, and don't use Winbroze 98 for servers, but use Win2K or later.
I assume ircd such as DICE achieves that, at the cost of no compatibility to Unix.

there is always colinux http://www.colinux.org/

bit more of a pain to set up than cygwin because it behaves like a seperate system and nwtorking etc need to be set up

but it also has near 100% linux compatibility which is not something that can be said of cygwin
