server setup help
« on: August 16, 2005, 03:07:21 am »
Hi.

I just install bnc, spybnc, eggdrop and upload ultimateircd.  How do edit the etc in the ultimateIRCD and how do I run the server?  I try some commands for ultimateIRCD.exe but they don't work.

Thank you.

You wrote you tried UltimateIRCd.EXE, so i assume we're talking about the Win32 version :)
At least you have to checkout the files in "Ultimate3.0.1-Win32\etc\"
Create the file ircd.conf from ircd.conf.dist. Add the M: line and type in the servername you want to use, and IP / port it should bind to.
Something like this should work:
 M:Test.Shadow-Realm.org:192.168.1.1:yooo:6667

Also find the O: lines section and add yourself in like this:
 O:*:yeahhh:lain:OAbcCkKrRDphwlgENZ:10
(above allows you to use "/OPER lain yeahhh" ones you are connected)

ircd.ini would most likely not need to be edited if you don't mind using the template that comes with the "out-of-the-box" installation.

Maybe look at the network file under "Ultimate3.0.1-Win32\etc\networks" should be modded with the correct network name etc.

Don't try to use the Win32 version on Linux/Unix. You can reuse the .conf .ini .network files from your win32 setup. But use the little tutorial below to install on your shell instead.
Code: [Select]
wget http://switch.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/ultimate/Ultimate3.0.1.tar.gz
tar -zxvf Ultimate3.0.1.tar.gz
rm Ultimate3.0.1.tar.gz
cd Ultimate3.0.1
./configure --enable-openssl --with-maxclients=250    ( ./configure --disable-openssl  --with-maxclients=250 )
make
make install
cd ..
rm -r Ultimate3.0.1
cd UltimateIRCd/bin
./ssl-cert.sh
cd ../etc
pico ircd.conf  ( maybe "nano ircd.conf" or even "vi ircd.conf" )
cd ..
./ircd

thank you for your help,  that's very helpful.  But i'm stuck there :( .

Code: [Select]
rm -r Ultimate3.0.1
cd UltimateIRCd/bin
./ssl-cert.sh
cd ../etc
pico ircd.conf  ( maybe "nano ircd.conf" or even "vi ircd.conf" )
cd ..
./ircd

when i type rm -r Ultimate3.0.1, it says "rm:  Ultimate3.0.1: No such file or directory"

and when i type ./ssl-cert.sh , it says "-bash:  ./ssl-cert.sh: No such file or directory"

can you show me how to get through that?

thank you.  I really appreciate that.

Wow ... You know what, I figure that out.  Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Okay .. Now they ask me to set up the SSL, and ask me "How many days will your certificate last?" And I put down 10 days.  I have no idea what that mean.  If there's something wrong, can I change that number later?

What's the pico.   When I type it, it says "UW Pico (tm) 4.9    File:ircd.conf     Modified.  I don't know how to edit the ircd.conf on shell.  What i did was I edit it in the notepad.  What should I do now ?

The certificate should last 700 days or something. As long as you want to use SSL at least from that server. It's simply the certificate that SSL uses when clients connect to it.

And for file editing there is as I mentioned a couple of programs you can use if installed:
pico = file editor (like notepad)
nano = file editor (like notepad)
vi = older file editor (nothing alike it, edlin comes close, lol)

"vi" is always installed. pico often, nano from time to time. nano and pico are similar, they have a help system and all. "vi" you need to know. When you want to insert something, press "i", when you're done, press escape button, and ":wq", : = command, w = write, q = quit. There are more like searching etc. GOOGLE them if needed ;)

If you had pico or nano on the box, then CTRL+X would save and exit.

ircd.conf is surposed to be in ./etc
not in the root.

and you start it using the symbolic link, ircd. So type ./ircd
Then it should start in the background :)

Hi Erich, I'm not sure that I put the right ip, and I just check my ircd.conf.  It's there, how come there is an error when i run ircd.

Server / SSH Host: stealth.sh3lls.net
Dedicated IP for IRCD: 64.18.143.159

I got that from the ssh host.  Is that the ip I should put in M: ?

Addition:
what motd should I edit?  There are three of them: ircd.smotd, ircd.opermotd and ircd.motd.

Sounds like you need to configure it again. From the start, not with 250 as in my tut, but with a maximum of 150 instead. Try that ;)

In the M line and ALSO in the P lines.
Don't make it *, then it would listen on all IP's that the box has. That is properly going to cause you alot of problems :)
So type in the IP in both M and P lines.

Good luck.
