Used be..long ago and far away..called primary hub and secondary hub.

If leaf loses connection to primary it automatically seeks out secondary hub.

If I recall, it was just a second set of hub C/N lines in leaf .conf...but I'm probably wrong.

I have no clue how to realize it this can cause nearly 300 seconds lagg on the network and during this time messages can/will be lost.

Under bad circumstances the msg can be send twice over the network and ... and ... and ...

Probably bore the hell out of some, but a bit of back ground anyway (as this old and decrepit mind remembers it).

On a larger network there will be one main hub with, say, three hubs connected to it. Each of those three hubs will have, say, three leafs connected to them. If one of them crashes the leafs connected to it are left sitting out in the cold...unless there are an extra set of C/N lines for a different hub they can connect to. Of course, that other hub has to have C/N lines for the orphaned leafs.

On thinking about it, an oper had to reconnect the lost leafs...I think...but it may have happened automatically. Damn, it's tough getting old and being afflicted with altzheimers. If it doesn't happen automatically, might be nice to come up with a way to do it. Otherwise, rely on opers who know what to do and how to make it happen.

Far as lag, it's no different than a split. Server splits off..then comes back and all is well again...cept for the crashed hub...may it rest in peace.

*finds AgainAway's(my fingers cramp from trying to get all the different caps in your nick..no offense) cache's glasses so it can find stuff again(probably the same place Shadow's glasses hide)*

'S ok.   :)

Ohh, missed a piece of the original post. There is going to be a split no matter what, you just can't get around it. Server can not be connected to two hubs at the same time, so there will be a split, no matter how small it is. Has to be disconnected before being reconnected to backup hub.

I have given this some thought, but im unsure of how feasible it is. Making the IRCd capable of having multiple links established would in all likelyhood require a major rewrite.

The fact that its not already done (and its known to be something which could be desireable) by someone supports the idea that the current protocol is not easilly made to do this.
