remote addline and global addline
« on: October 05, 2003, 10:52:58 pm »
This, to me, seems like a very useful function..

for example we have /addchnline, you could have /raddcnline <server> and add that cnline to the config of a remote server.. another good idea is a global addline - adding that line to all linked servers.. this would make it very easy when adding new H/U lines, etc...

I'd also like to see vIdent and GCOS in Ultimate.. but I dunno if you like that idea..

That's a great idea, except for if you make a mistake. Then you need to remove a line from all servers, assuming that people who can access the .conf are even online all at once. Then you need to resend the new line. I'm sure there are plenty of good reasons for it, as well as plenty of bad reasons for it. I, personally do not use tools like addline and it's friends because I always prefer doing the editing myself over using a tool to do it for me. Sure it may take a little longer, but it gives you a chance to look over your .conf while you're at it, just to make sure it's all cool.

Just my 2 pence though.

Remote line functions __might__ be added. But it would be in the very distant :badword:ure.

As for vident and gcos, no :)

I just like being able to set my vident, because it makes it easy to change to [email protected]:badword:heads ;)

*cringes* The very thought of 'remline' just fills me with dread. If you can get it coded, make it work and make it work well, then great, power to 'ya. But in the interests of security, I'd really have to hang a big banner saying 'No Way' somewheres... I don't have control in how Ultimate devel goes though, so Shadow and the posse may decide to add it or not. I'm just providing an arguement against it.

That's not to say it doesn't have merit, but I'm old-school, I'd rather edit the confs myself and make any changes I need, rather than via IRC. Global 'addline' could work, provided it was REALLY locked down tight and maybe some 'duplicate' checks to make sure you don't add the same kind of line with the same contents, twice... stuff like that, then maybe it could work. But I'm still not entirely thrilled about it... just my 2 pence ;)

I prefer to edit the conf in vi too, but say you have abou 15 servers and you want to add a new U line or something..

rather than spend ages :badword:ing around with various shells and stuff, you could just..

/gaddline U:*:server......
